Forest Tourism – A Green Path Toward Sustainable Forestry

Travel to OregonAt the end of September 2011, the occasion being the World Tourism Day (27th September), the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), an organisation of which the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is also a member, promoted its view on the positive influence that ecotourism has on forestry. Moreover, an increasing number of governments are considering ecotourism as a means to promote sustainable forestry management and support local communities. Travel to Oregon and you will know more what I am talking about.

Despite the grave economic situation in the last couple of years, according to the World Tourism Organisation (WTO), international tourism has demonstrated healthy growth, with almost 5% in the first half of 2011, setting a new record of 440 million arrivals, according to the UN WTO. Moreover, in the UNWTO long-term forecast, Tourism Towards 2030, released in October 2011, international tourism is expected to continue to grow in a sustained manner in the next two decades. Ecotourism, as a niche within the larger tourism industry, is one of the fastest growing segments of tourism worldwide, according to the FAO. Therefore, the perspective for long-term sustainable economic growth has the potential to stimulate also forestry funds to participate on the forest ecotourism market as well as sustaining funds to help fight forest fires when they occur. In addition, through forest ecotourism, private companies will have the opportunity to make profit out of socially responsible investments.

Ecotourism involves responsible travelling to natural areas, with the purpose to educate the traveller… Continue reading

Depletion of Forest Resources

Travel to Costa RicaINTRODUCTION

Echo systems around the world help sustain life for millions of species. Echo systems that are mainly forests provide a home for a large majority of the species alive. Therefore the trees in these forests are considered to be the most important species. Although it is true, that most species are not able to sustain without each other.

There are many benefits that we get from our forests, which is why it makes sense to use Specialty Supply  erosion control products where you can as well as limit deforestation. Some of these include cleaner drinking water, a home for plants and animals, economic growth, clean air, recreational opportunities, reassuring future. Another benefit we get from trees is called oxygen. If there were no trees to give us oxygen to breath, we would not be able to live. So if you need one good reason why a forest should exist, staying alive is a pretty good reason.

To help preserve the forest from eroding away check out and see how they can help you.

The cause for cutting down forests is directly associated with the high demand for wood to manufacture paper products and lumber for other manufacturing. We practically use wood for everything. It is used in home building, marine products, furniture and the list seems like it’s endless. Just look around yourself right now and chances are you will find a product within your reach that is made of wood. Not… Continue reading

The Benefits of Sustainable Retail Packaging

Posh and striking packaging plays a big role in the modern consumerism and so should the environmental impact of not using a reusable shopping bag. Businesses are aware that buyers decide which product to buy based on the attractiveness of the item’s packaging and tend to ignore the bag in which the product is placed once the purchase is made. That is why they spend a lot of resources only to come up with a remarkable design that will stand out from the crowd and attract more buyers. However, there is always a price to pay for every gain. The process of creating eye-catching packaging entails heavy cost whereas the price to develop and make a reusable grocery bag is less expensive. Though packaging is useful in creating a sound brand it is responsible for the increasing wastes in our planet every year. Some of the waste are being recycled, however the greater part of it does go straight to landfill and this eventually contaminates the soil and poisons the bodies of water. The environmental impact of product packaging far out weighs the need to go over the top. Why not rely on the brand itself and not the packaging that gets thrown away?

Now, as enterprises become more conscious of the packaging’s impact on the environment, businesses now shift to a more environmental approach in terms of packaging, which will help preserve our forests and other natural resources. Also, they were compelled to use eco-friendly packaging because more and… Continue reading

Eco-Innovative Concepts for Increasing Automated Truck Wash Volume

When it comes to eco-innovations in business you need a large mega-phone and you need to market and advertise or you’ll end up like 10s of thousands of eco-entrepreneurs gone bankrupt while trying to chase so-called easy money, grants, guaranteed loans, and catch the wave of eco-friendly trends. Okay so, let me give you an example here, let’s talk about an eco-innovative automated truck washing system.

First, your goal of course is to dominate local market share for fleet truck washing, and even though your system has a great reclaim system for environmental washing, you need to advertise and market this to your customers, and show them why this is a benefit. So, let me show you how to do this.

You see, there will always be local competitors that compete with your truck wash which are mobile, and they come onto the properties of various companies that have the fleets and clean the vehicles right there. It will be very hard for you to compete on price with these types of firms, but you will have something else going for you. Companies with fleets are often visited by storm water enforcement personnel, and they must satisfy the needs of the NPDES permits.

It also makes sense to be on a first name basis with the storm water enforcement folks in your area, and the surrounding areas. This way if a company is fined or cited for cleaning the vehicles on their property and letting the dirty waste wash… Continue reading

Plastic Bag Bans And What It Means To Manufacturers And Retailers

For every plastic bag produced, there is an equivalent amount of greenhouse gases produced. Then, after the use of said bags, they would more often than not be thrown away indiscriminately. These plastic bags would end up clogging the drainage system in a city, pollute wild lands, and place undue risk to the life of aquatic creatures. That is why you should look at for reusable bags.

Because of these reasons, more and more people and businesses are clamoring for the reduced use of plastic bags. Legislations both in the US and outside of it have already been passed to cut down the usage of plastic shopping bags and the like. Some laws impose additional tax on the use of these bags while some laws are stricter and require a total ban.

The ban of plastic bags is not as widespread as some parties would like. Not all sectors agree that banning its use would result in the reduction of greenhouse gases produced by manufacturing companies. Some even go as far as arguing that if we make the switch to paper shopping bags, we would not be able to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions as the production of said containers would also mean cutting down trees, shipping them to the factory, and burning fossil fuels to turn them into finished products.

As a business owner, you have to be aware of this ever changing landscape. You might be operating in a state or locality where there… Continue reading

Recycling for Beginners

If you’re new to the wonderful world of recycling, the first thing you need to do is obtain some recycling containers. If you’re lucky enough to live in an area with curbside recycling pick-up, you may not need many–you will at least have one for plastic and maybe one for paper.

In some areas, like mine for example, you have to get creative. We have to deliver our paper (including cardboard), plastic and metal to the transfer station here. In addition, our local paper has receptacles for paper only, as well as aluminum cans. The money from the paper they recycle there goes to the local food bank and the money from the aluminum goes to the Boy Scouts of America. Unfortunately, no one in our area recycles glass. Hazardous materials are collected once a year on a special day. (Check with your local chamber of commerce to find out where to recycle in your area.)

You should probably start with at least 4 containers. Add a fifth to your backyard (if you have one) for composting. For plastic, some areas will only take certain numbers (check your container for the number encircled with arrows). Others will take it all, (and styrofoam, too).

Make sure your containers are clean. You don’t need to use a lot of water to do this, most of the time a quick rinse is fine. Otherwise, wash the containers at the end of your dishes (if by hand), and some may be placed in… Continue reading

Wasting Energy, Making Pollution, and Throwing Trash in the Street Is Wrong – We All Know That

Not long ago, I got an interesting comment on an environmental article I wrote concerning the “fear factor” purported by global warming alarmists. The comment coming in noted that we should accentuate the positive and not the negative. Right Agreed. False-Fear based scare tactics are not wise, especially when those who purvey such fears do it for less-than-ethical reasons and motives. What is worse is those who blindly follow and refuse to challenge the kings in naked wardrobes.

We should all recycle, re-use, repurpose, and promote wise living without excessive waste, that’s the ethical and right thing to do. We should thus, do that for the right reasons and not be forced to blindly follow some fear driven propaganda campaign. My acquaintance making the comment had some thoughts on the future growing of meat in a laboratory rather than an actual livestock animal. She believed that it made sense to grow the animal because that was the natural way to do it, and I might add that it is also the proper evolutionary way that humans are accustomed too.

If we screw around with nature too much without understanding all the biological processes, which as far as science is concerned, well, we still don’t know completely thus, we should be hesitant about playing modification as if we were gods. Yes, I tend to agree that on the animal waste issue mostly I am concerned with stupid things like shark-fin soup in Asia, what a waste to throw away the… Continue reading

Restoring a Dying River Close to the Sea – It Can Be Done, Let Me Explain So You Can See

Not long ago, I was talking with an acquaintance, an environmentalist at heart I’d say, and he lives in Arizona. He stated that he wanted to restore a dying river and make it environmentally sound and that people just do not realize the value of a river. Well, I do, and I am also aware of the Technocrats and Howard Scott’s concepts to have manmade rivers for barges to move enormous loads of resources, materials, people, and products throughout the nation. That makes sense, even if I am not so keen on all of his concepts, I tend to agree with the movement by river of goods and services – distribution is a key flow of any civilization.

Now then, my acquaintance said that we ought to use desalination strategies to restore the river outside of Tucson, the Santa Cruz River, something he was adamant about, and yet, I could not understand how come he didn’t already know all about it since it is in the public records ( He knew some of the early history from the old farmers in the region, and how their jerry-rigging the river caused it to blow its banks and create a flood region – he wanted that fixed, easier said than done. He also stated we should use desalination.

Turns out the ancient American Indians of the region has a great network of agricultural canals they had built, perhaps the farmers in the region noticed this in the early 1900s… Continue reading
